Farmers - The Example of Safety on the Road

Added 5/14/2007 by anonymous

This car was spotted driving down a busy street near Downtown Phoenix Arizona on 5/13/2007 at 17:47 a Sunday afternoon. This Farmers employee wasnt doing a very good job driving or paying attention to other cars while yacking away on a cellular phone. I followed it for about 2 miles and noticed the Farmers Employee was sheepily following the car in front of it braking often. Note that the car also has the passenger side tail lamp burned out.

What a great example of safety Farmers sets for other drivers on the road!

Farmers Insurance: Yacking on the Cellular Phone While Driving

Yacking on Cellular Phone while driving

Recently on Mytbusters the TV show on Discovery Channel, they tested the abilities of a driver talking on a Cellular phone and those of a person that is just under .08 Blood Alcohol Content on a drivers course. Both make a notible difference in driving ability decline, however the Cellular phone is worse because only one hand is on the wheel and constant distraction from driving.

  • A Study April 2006 found that close to 80 percent of crashes and 65% of near crashes involved some form of driver innattention within 3 seconds of the event.
  • Motorists who use cell phones while driving are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves according to a Pert, Australia Study.
  • Some States in the US have already banned the use of cellular phones while driving.

Talking on the cell phone while driving is the same as driving drunk!

A study at the University of Utah tested the effects of driving under the influence and driving while talking on the phone. 40 volunteers participated and an unexpected result was found.

Some participants crashed in a virtual vehicle while sober and talking but none of them crashed while drunk!

Same car while braking, tail light is out!

COMMENTS ABOUT THIS ARTICLE

Comment: Did your site or Myth Busters site ever consider the dangers of taking close up photos of other drivers while driving? Seems to me that the person who posted these photos had to be using a camera while driving since they indicated that they had followed the Farmers vehicle for 2 miles. Cell phones are not illegal and yes common sense must be utilized with any activity while driving. How about the smokers who are puffing away and then flick their lit cigarette out the window and start brush fires? Gross? I dare your site to post this rebuttal message. I hope you feel good that the employee in the photo has probably lost their job over this person?s photo posting. Who made your website the morality police?

Comment: Close up photos? Have you heard of the concept of zoom? These photos are clearly taken from 20' or more away. You also dont know if a driver or a passenger took the photo. Regardless, the contributor of the photo isnt under scrutiny by this web site, Farmers Insurance is. The purpose of this site is for discussion on topics of the company, what they stand for and their practices. The contributor of this photo isnt driving a Farmers Insurance car, they are driving a personal vehicle that in no way advertises a product or promotes anything.

This employee on the other hand, represents a company and holds a position of what is most likely a claims rep. Both of which are public figures which should promote safety. A company that insures against losses due to many reasons promotes safety on every level for their policy holders. If they dont stand up or adhere to their own preaching's, then as clearly noted here, should be made accountable.

We know Cell Phones are not illegal, and that also wasnt an argument of this article. Generally an object isnt illegal, it is how its used. A car isnt illegal, but running someone down on the street with the intent on killing them is. Owning a brick isnt illegal, but throwing it at someone is. This article did not discuss the legality of the practice of talking on a cell phone while driving. This article was about it being unsafe to do so and someone that should be setting the example was being unsafe. If they lost their job due to this article, then we did them a favor. Maybe they go out and buy a hands-free headset and fix the cause of the problem and learn from the experience. Maybe they go out and find a better job somewhere else. From what we've heard, being a Farmers Claims Rep sucks too!

The 1st amendment affords this website the right to publish and discuss topics in regards to anything it wishes, in this case we choose to keep it on the topic of Farmers Insurance and perhaps we might stray every now and then. In any case, it (the web site) need not be appointed as "morality police" in order to have a right to exercise this right.

You are more than welcome to post all the rebuttals you like. You may also refute our additional arguments against your rebuttal. We welcome it.

Comment: Farmers Insurance policy with regard to company vehicles is that employees are not permitted to talk on cell phones while driving, unless using a hands-free device. Any employee that has ever checked out a utility vehicle knows this, as it is written on the in-seam of the vehicle check-out binder. This binder is given to an employee prior to taking a car out, and is used to log date out, date in, miles, etc.

Comment: The sad thing is that Farmers quotes safety policies about cell phones in the vehicles but does not provide hands free devices. They also expect you to answer the phone 24/7 no matter where you are.

Comment: I can tell you, Farmers says that you are not supposed to talk on the phone while driving but they know full and well that it is impossible to complete your job in the time provided without doing so. The only thing that concerns this company is the bottom line, why else would they demand that you drive a branded car without regard of the safety of the driver( free advertisement at what cost?).

Comment: Sounds like anonymous #1 needs to think through his comment about who took the pic. He assumes driver did. duh. I do, however agree w/ his other comments about idiots who smoke and toss butts out the window. I also think cell phone use in cars should be made ILLEGAL. Most of the time when I'm driving and see a car doing something stupid (going through red lights, going too slow, now turn signals, crossing lanes, etc) they've got a cell phone stuck in their ear!!

Comment: The public wants to pay less for insurance coverage. ins companies want to be "the low cost provider"(GEICO) they all push employees to get more done each day than is possible. this is how FARMERS& GEICO and others got into trouble with overtime lawsuits. it sucks to work for big claims insurers...i know i have worked for 4 of them. but it also is amazing how much FRAUD there is by the insuring public. those that complain the most often seem to be the most corrupt in my experience. if you want a great Auto Insurer..go with WAWANESA in San Diego. they are the best i have run across. CSAA is great also.
