Whether you are a new agent, and old agent, or an agent wannabe, you have fallen prey to one or all of these myths. We all did.
Myth one:
Farmers Agents are independent business owners: Freshman Orientation: You’ve been drafted onto the "District Team and a corkscrew implanted." No one asked if you wanted to be a team member; nevertheless, you’re a blood member, and this is the beginning of everything you don’t want, unwritten quotas, control, and pressure--- forever. Your DM is your boss, and he’ll remind you. If independence is your ambition, you are in the wrong place.
Myth two:
I have a good contract. Reality: You have a 90-day-at-a-time contract. You can be terminated for any reason or for no stated reason and your phone lines and office seized. If you didn’t receive a termination notice today, you have 90 days left, and that’s the way it is--- each day.
Myth three:
I will work at my own pace. Reality: You are controlled by the 90-day Agreement and your DM and DMM, both of whom can make life miserable for you by turning that screw. Bear in mind, they have to make their quotas. Conform or they’ll dump you in a heartbeat.
Myth four:
The AAA termination clause is rarely used: Big Myth. It’s invoked all the time. It rides on the corkscrew in you’re “A.” What’s more, your DM and DMM can destroy agents simply through the processes of bullying, harassments, and intimidations. They’ll make your life so miserable that you will resign--- and be glad to be Farmers Free.
Myth five:
All I have to do is work hard while I’m young and build my business; then I can slow down when I reach my comfort level.
Reality: This is not only an old, old myth, it is district-manager bull shit used for years in recruiting.
With, FIG, do not believe anything they tell you, and place no faith at all in the AAA. Those who do are the exact suckers they are searching for.
Do believe a former agent of 27 years--- corkscrew removed. I am delighted to be Farmers Free, and I took particular delight in learning that the screw turners lost, in the first year, over half of the policies they paid me for. And I’m helping them lose the rest. I’m referring them. And who’s better at losing policies than the screw turners! Ha!
