Thinking about becoming a Farmers Agent

I am so glad I took the time to read your website.

This is shocking and everything you mentioned about recruiting has been true. The lies they are selling to perpetuate this hustle. So is there any hope? Is this just Farmers? Should I try to pursue another company like State Farm or Allstate? Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for your submission!

The other two that you mentioned generally require prior agent experience before you can have your own agency. I'm not sure how their programs are in comparison personally but I will recommend the following to you:

Go through the Farmers Reserve Agent training - This will give you a feel somewhat of what its like. They do a good job training you to be honest, its the rest of the program where they fall short, such as competitively priced products and screwing agents down the road to push them out. As long as you dont write too many policies and qualify to convert to Career Agent, you're in good shape. If you can handle it, take the training for 6 months as a Reserve Agent.

Next: Shop around town for Independent agencies. With your prior training, you will have a decent head start and knowledge on how to sell. Signing up as a Producer Agent for an Independent will help you do two things. 1. Allow you to sell real and competitive products without the worry of running the agency. 2. Give you experience and contacts for later on. Plan to stay a producer for 2 years or so, make nice with the insurance company marketing reps that stop around, keep their cards for later

Last: Only if you feel like it and have 60-100k in backing. Start your own agency. Use your contacts over the last couple years as inroads to write business on your own. Start with 3 carriers then add more as you grow.

Thats basically it in a nutshell. You dont want to stay long term with any captive because you are always going to be tied down to more rules and less products.
